Anne Hathaway loves living life under the radar.
The actress who has quietly dated actor Adam Shulman for more than two-and-a-half years told the new issue of Harper’s Bazaar that she enjoys being out of the spotlight.
“So far, it’s worked out great,” said Hathaway, who admits that in the past she’s tended toward more dramatic relationships.
“Which has its wonderful side, of course … but also it was exhausting, and sometimes it would freak me out.
“Mellow doesn’t always make for a good story, but it makes for a good life.”
Anne’s last boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri, made headlines in 2008 after he was arrested on charges of wire fraud and money-laundering. Though she and Follieri had already separated, Hathaway felt the heat in the press as her ex appeared in court and eventually pled guilty to posing as a Vatican real estate agent and swindling millions of dollars out of investors.
Looking back, the Devil Wears Prada star admits her romance with Follieri was a much-needed learning experience she was changing herself for love and it wasn’t worth it.
“There’s something very addictive about people pleasing,” she explains. “It’s a thought pattern and a habit that feels really, really good until it becomes desperate.
“It’s one of the reasons that relationship ended. I wasn’t able to grow or foster anything. I think a lot of girls have that story. It’s a big moment when you step away from that and say, ‘I’m going to be exactly who I am. And I’m going to be brave enough to only be with someone who wants me the way I am.’”
